Where does ingrown toenail hurt?
An ingrown toenail is an extremely painful condition that occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the skin of the toes. It can occur on any of the toes, though it is most common on the big toe. Ingrown toenails can be quite upsetting, as they can cause immense pain and discomfort.
When an ingrown toenail is present, it is characterised by pain along the side of the toe, usually where the nail has grown into the toe.
The skin around the nail may appear red and can become swollen, tender and may even become infected. In some cases, people may also experience drainage of pus.
The area will often be painful when pressure is applied or when physical activity is undertaken. It may be difficult for the person to wear shoes, as the pressure from the shoe can cause the toe to become more inflamed and sore.
The pain from an ingrown toenail can vary from person to person. Some people experience a dull ache or throbbing sensation, while others can experience sharp, stabbing or pulsating pain. The intensity of the pain will often increase until the nail is appropriately tended to.
It is important for someone with an ingrown toenail to seek medical advice, as the condition can become severe if it is not treated correctly. If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can result in infection, chronic inflammation and complications involving more extensive surgery.
