When is heel pain serious?
Heel pain is a common ailment and can generally be treated by home remedies such as stretching, icing, and rest.
However, in certain cases, heel pain can indicate a more serious condition that requires medical attention. If the heel pain is caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition caused by the straining and overuse of the band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, then it is likely serious.
Swelling and extreme pain when the foot is flexed is a common symptom of plantar fasciitis. High heels, walking barefoot, or standing for long periods can aggravate this condition.
Trauma, like from a fall or blows to the heel, can also lead to plantar fasciitis. Achilles tendonitis, an inflamation of the Achilles tendon, can also be very serious and require medical attention.
This condition is also caused by overuse and is especially common in runners and athletes who play sports involving running and jumping. Symptoms can include heel pain, pain in the lower leg, and swelling.
Sometimes heel pain can be caused by stress fractures, tiny fractures in a bone usually caused overuse, which are especially common in athletes and people who walk, run, and jump a great deal. In more serious cases, the pain can be more intense, and the pain may even linger after rest.
Additional medical conditions that may cause heel pain include tarsal tunnel syndrome, nerve compression, fractures, tumors, and arthritis.
If none of these are the cause of the heel pain, yet the pain persists, it is best to have it evaluated by a medical professional ideally a podiatrist.
In general, heel pain that persists, worsens, or is accompanied by swelling, redness, or bruising may indicate a more serious condition that requires medical attention.
If home remedies do not provide relief, or if the pain does not improve with rest, it is best to see a podiatrist to avoid further injury or complications.
