Sever's Disease (Calcaneal Apophysitis)

Sever's disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a common cause of heel pain in physically active growing children, particularly those between the ages of 8 and 14. It occurs due to inflammation of the growth plate in the heel (calcaneus) as a result of repetitive stress or overuse during sports or physical activities.

Symptoms of Sever's disease may include:

  • Pain and tenderness in the heel, especially during or after physical activities
  • Limping or walking on toes to avoid putting pressure on the heel
  • Swelling and redness in the heel area
  • Stiffness and discomfort in the heel, particularly in the morning

At our clinic, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of Sever's disease. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  1. Full Biomechanical Assessment: Our expert team conducts a thorough biomechanical assessment to identify any underlying factors contributing to the condition, such as foot and ankle alignment, gait abnormalities, or muscle imbalances.
  2. Musculoskeletal (MSK) Assessment: We perform a detailed MSK assessment to evaluate the strength, flexibility, and overall health of the affected foot, ankle, and lower leg muscles and joints.
  3. Ultrasound Scanning: Our state-of-the-art ultrasound scanning technology allows us to visualize the soft tissues and growth plate of the heel, aiding in accurate diagnosis and monitoring of the condition.
  4. Customised Rehabilitation Program: Based on the assessment findings, we develop a personalised rehabilitation program that may include stretching and strengthening exercises, manual therapy techniques, and modalities such as ice or heat therapy to alleviate pain and promote healing.
  5. Guidance on Activity Modification: We provide guidance on appropriate activity modification, including temporary rest from aggravating activities and gradual return to sports, to ensure optimal recovery and prevent recurrence of symptoms.
